Lake Street School PTO Meeting

February 10, 2004

The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m.

President’s Report:  Ellen Skoly thanked Sue Ferruolo for the baked goods and coffee she provided for the PTO meeting.  She also thanked Mr. Houle, the Board of Education Representative for Lake Street School, for attending the PTO meeting.  Mr. Houle informed us that we can e-mail him at any time with any questions or concerns we may have.  His e-mail address will be on the LSS website for easy access.

November 2003 Minutes:  Ellen made a motion to pass the January minutes.

Ellen stated that Mrs. Marturano is collecting Fuji film containers for an event she is organizing.  There will be a can or box in the hallway to drop the containers in.

Treasurer’s Report:  The budget report was presented.

Education Committee:  Julie Marcotte mentioned the article in the Journal Inquirer regarding the LSS mural.  She also informed us that the Zoo Keepers assembly that was scheduled for last Friday (2/6) will be held this Friday (2/13).

Playscape:  Julie informed us that we received a package back from one of the vendors.  We should receive the other package from the other vendor this week.  We should be on the agenda next month to present both packages to the Town of Vernon Facilities Committee for their insight and approval.

Krispy Kreme Fundraiser:  This fundraiser is being held on Saturday, February 14th.

McDonald’s Night:  This event is scheduled for March 24th.  The teachers have signed up to work certain times that evening.  LSS will post the teacher sign-ups so you can see when your teacher will be working the event.

Lori Chapman purchased 250 balloons for the McDonald’s night.  A motion was made and passed to take $96.00 out of the general fund to purchase the balloons.  The remaining balloons will be used throughout the year for other LSS activities.

Cashback for Schools:  Lori Chapman informed us that LSS is in last place.  LSS is guaranteed $500.00 for being in last place.  The cash back finale is being held on March 24th.  All receipts must be validated by March 21st.  Reminder:  Every time your hand in your receipts for purchases made on Wednesday, LSS will receive double points.

Kidstown Fair/Silent Auction:  The first notice went out to everyone explaining the event and outlining the activities that will take place that day.  The Committee is looking for volunteers to help the day of the fair.  If you are interested in helping out the day of the fair, please complete the sign up sheet that was attached to the notice and return it to Lori Lawrynowicz.  If you have any questions, feel free to call her.

Yearbook:  We are still in need of pictures for the yearbook.  If you are at a LSS class event, please take pictures and drop them off in the yearbook box in the school office.

Principal’s Report:  Mr. Casavant spoke to the superintendent about after school programs.  The superintendent informed us that as long as it is a PTO sponsored activity it is not a problem.  You just have to fill out a building use form, you have to start off with a small group of students and it must be supervised at all times by an adult.

Darlene Murray informed us that Paula Baran will be hosting a sign language class beginning in March for the LSS students.  The class will be held every Friday for one hour after school for a five week session.  There will be a sign up sheet for the students and Paula will only take up to 15 students.  The sign language class will be held in the teacher’s lounge.  Information about this will be distributed to the students soon.

Mr. Casavant also informed us that the CMT’s are in bad shape.  They had to send the tests back to the vendor to be re-scored.  The CMT results should arrive some time in the Spring.

Mr. Casavant stated that an organized group of teachers and parents are putting together a “No Child Left Behind” requirement policy.  This policy will be distributed soon.

Mr. Casavant informed us that the student council is doing a wonderful job in collecting donations for the K-9 vest.  The school is well on its way to purchasing this vest.  Once the vest in purchased, a presentation will be presented to the students for their efforts.

Pawprints:  If you have any items to be put in the Pawprints newsletter, make sure you e-mail the item to Wayne Woodtke at waynewoodtke@yahoo.com by the 20th of each month.  It would be appreciated if you would also forward the item to Ellen and Darlene.

General Discussions/Suggested Changes For Next Year:  If anyone has any changes or ideas for the next school year regarding any PTO activities, please pass them along to Ellen and Darlene.  The PTO is still looking for someone to volunteer to coordinate the fall fundraiser.  If you are interested, please let Ellen or Darlene know.

Other:  A motion was made, voted on and passed to donate $250.00 to the Amelia Family Fund.  The mother and father were students at LSS and their young daughter has been diagnosed with a terminal illness.  The daughter is out of state (in the southwest) receiving treatment and the parents are in need of assistance.

Escape School:  The Escape School video was shown.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 p.m.
