Ellen Skoly and Darlene Murray went to the PTO Today Conference in Framingham, MA. It was a very informative meeting. They said it was nice to find out that Lake Street School’s PTO is doing a lot of things right. Ellen and Darlene handed out an article they received at the conference entitled “Powerful Research – Parent Involvement Works”.
Summer Vacation Program Package: The package will be going home with the students on Wednesday, May 12th. You will have to send in the money or return the package by Tuesday, May 18th. This is not a school or PTO fundraiser.
Board of Education: Stephen Cullinan, Superintendent of Schools for the Vernon Board of Education, presented us with a brochure entitled “Catalyst for Excellence: A Strategic Plan for the Vernon Public Schools.” He gave us a brief overview of the brochure and informed us that if we have any suggestions to improve the plan or have any comments, please notify the Board of Education.
Treasurer’s Report: The budget report was presented. Dave Murray informed us that LSS’ general fund has money remaining from last year and will have money remaining at the end of this school year. Some of the excess money will be split between the playscape and the scholarship fund. Dave also looked into finding a more interest bearing account for the scholarship fund but could not find anything that was risk free. Dave also reminded everyone to submit all reimbursement forms by June 18th. Remember to complete the PTO reimbursement forms and attach all necessary receipts.
Transition to Middle School: Dr. Katz from the Vernon Center Middle School spoke about the transition to the Middle School. She presented us with a brochure entitled “Middle School – Keys to Success.”
Officer Elections: A motion was made to nominate the present sitting PTO Board. The motion was voted on and passed.
Principal’s Report: Steve Casavant informed us that the Superintendent of the Board of Education has asked the PTO to support the budget. If the budget does not pass next Tuesday, there can be significant consequences.
Dean Houle of the Board of Education: Mr. Houle discussed the budget and how important it is that it is passed. The Board really needs the support. The next referendum vote is being held on Tuesday, May 18th.
Teacher’s Report: Mrs. Sinacola reported that Rie Sakai, Intern from Japan, got married in Hawaii and she will be sending us pictures via e-mail. LSS is working on a scrap book to send to her and Mrs. Sinacola will present it at the next PTO meeting. The second grade teachers also thanked the Education Committee for the Native American Dancers program. The school is having fun promoting “earth day.” T-shirts will be displayed on the walls throughout the school showing different ways to protect the earth. The 4th graders decorated “earth day” bags and gave them to Stop and Shop to use. The 4th graders had a wonderful time at Sturbridge Village. The 5th grade Boston field trip is being held on June 9th.
NEW BUSINESS:
There was a question when 5th grade recognition was being held. It is being held on June 16th. Sue Ferruolo made a comment that it would be appreciated by everyone if notices would be sent home sooner than later regarding the upcoming 5th grade events. Steve Casavant stated that he would have a 5th grade newsletter sent home soon with all the programs that are taking place in May and June.
Jennifer DiTommaso stated that the 4th graders are looking for shoe boxes for an upcoming project. Please send all shoe boxes to the office before May 23rd.
Education Committee: Julie Marcotte informed us that a questionnaire will be going out to the teachers regarding programs that took place during the school year. The Education Committee is looking for feedback so that they can decide on programs for next year.
Jennifer DiTommaso stated that the Education Committee has put together a 5th grade program entitled “Be Tobacco Free.” This program will take place on June 8th.
Silkworms: Ellen Skoly informed us that Lori Downes will be sending out the information regarding this function soon. The event is being held on June 18th.
Rock Cats: Dave Murray informed us that the deadline to purchase tickets for the Rock Cats is next week. The event is being held on June 6th.
Playscape: Julie Marcotte informed us that the Committee is scheduled to present both playscape designs to the Town Facilities Committee on May 24th. At the end of May (possibly May 25th), the two vendors will present their designs to LSS. This is open to the public. The Committee would like to choose which vendor they will go with by June 1st and they will work with that vendor to finalize the playscape design. The Committee hopes to go back to the Town Facilities Committee in August or September to present the final design and to begin Phase I in the fall.
The Committee is still looking for a large playscape fundraiser for next year. If anyone has any ideas, let them know.
Child Care Providers at PTO Meetings: Julie Marcotte suggested that a small gift (movie tickets, blockbuster gift card) should be given to the child care providers.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:33 p.m.
