Lake Street School PTO Meeting

May 10, 2005

 The meeting was called to order at 7:12 p.m.

 President’s Report:  Ellen Skoly informed us that this is the last PTO meeting at LSS.  The meeting in June will take place at her house.  Ellen thanked everyone who helped with the first phase of the playscape installation and how wonderful it looks.  She informed us that Mr. Testa has been appointed as the permanent principal of LSS starting in the 2005-2006 school year.  The PTO showed their appreciation by presenting him with a gift and cake.  Ellen stated that we will vote on the election of officers at the end of the meeting.

 April 2005 Minutes:  Ellen Skoly made a motion to pass the April minutes.

 Treasurer’s Report:  The budget report was presented.  Dave Murray made a motion to move the remaining PTO general fund money from this 2004-2005 school year as well as $4,000 leftover savings from previous years into the scholarship fund and into the playscape fund.  The motion was voted on and passed.

 Playscape:  Julie Marcotte thanked everyone who helped with the first phase of the playscape installation.  She informed us that the engraved brick pavers fundraiser notice will be coming home with the students this week.  The cost for an engraved single line is $75.00 and for a double line the cost is $85.00.  The brick pavers will be installed with the second phase of the playscape installation.  Julie stated that they will run this fundraiser again in September.  The Committee will also be soliciting businesses to participate in this event.  Julie informed us that the Committee will be meeting with the Mayor for more ADA money for the playscape.

            Ellen Skoly told us that there are numerous pictures on the LSS website of the first phase of the playscape installation.

            Magic Show:  Terry Tomaszewski told us that there is a magic show being held next Friday (May 20th at 7:00 p.m.) to help fund the playscape.  The notice about the magic show went home with the students.  They are looking for donations for raffle prizes that will be held the night of the magic show.  The magic show is $5.00 per person and $1.00 per raffle ticket. 

 Scholarship Update:  Darlene Murray informed us that the scholarship committee has chosen two students from RHS who will be awarded scholarships.  The students will be notified on June 9th at the awards ceremony.  Darlene told us that plaques will be displayed at LSS after the awards are given out.  She also informed us that the discussion about having the students who receive the awards come to LSS at the end of the year for a visit will not take place this school year but may be held at an assembly the next school year. 

Schoolwide Program – “Primary Focus” Event:  Mrs. Barry spoke about this program.  It is a character education program for the LSS students.  The program will take place on May 11th.  The program is being sponsored and financed by Maxine Schortman

 501-c3 Application/Bylaws:  Jennifer DiTommaso informed us that LSS is looking into filing a 501-(c)(3) application which will allow LSS PTO to become a nonprofit corporation with tax exempt status.  She handed out a form explaining the process.  A motion was voted on and passed to allow Jennifer to continue with the paperwork for LSS PTO to become incorporated.

Kindergarten Breakfast:  Lisa Poutre informed us that this event will take place on May 13th from 8:30 to 9:30.  The PTO Board will be introduced at the breakfast and some of the 5th graders will take the kindergarten students on a tour around LSS. 

             The staff luncheon will take place on May 11th.  The Hospitality Committee stated that everything is all set for this event.

 Board of Education:  Dean Houle reported to us that the Board is still waiting to hear about the outcome of the Town Council meeting regarding the town budget.  He also informed us that contract negotiations for the Town of Vernon school renovations have begun. 

 Teacher’s Report:  Mrs. Barry and Mrs. Sinacola informed us of the upcoming events happening in the school by grade level. 

Principal’s Report:  Mr. Testa told us that LSS raised $1,000 for the Hole in the Wall Gang camp.  The students who earned the money will go to the camp on Thursday.  Mr. Testa informed us that he has no new information regarding classroom arrangements for next year.  He also thanked everyone who has made him feel welcome at LSS. 

New Business

Books of Honor:  Jennifer DiTommaso stated that the Books of Honor books will be in the library tomorrow.  The books will go home with the students within the next couple of days. 

Silkworm’s Family Night:  Ellen Skoly told us that the event will take place on Friday, June 10th.  More information on this event will be sent home with the students.

 Election of 2005-2006 PTO Board:  A motion was made, voted on and passed on the PTO officers for the 2005-2006 LSS school years.  They are:  President – Jennifer DiTommaso;

Vice President – Pam Oliva; Secretary – Lisa Poutre; and Treasurer – Paul Gilson
