Lake Street School PTO, Inc. Meeting

May 9, 2006

 

The meeting was called to order at 7:04 p.m.

 

Meeting Minutes:  A motion was made to pass the April minutes.

 

Treasurer’s Report:  Paul Gilson reviewed the budget.  A $300 Walmart grant and an increase of  $1000 from the brick pavers were reflected in the budget.  No fundraising activity to report.

 

Board of Education:  Amarjit Buttar advised that the latest board meeting was uneventful. 

He reminded people to vote.  A House Master position for the high school was added.

Jennifer Werner requested that he have someone look into the sidewalk situation outside of the school.

 

Principal’s Report:  Nothing to report.  He is awaiting the outcome of the town budget vote.

 

Dr. Katz, VCMS Principal,  was welcomed to the meeting.  She provided an overview of what incoming 6th grade students can expect the first day and week of school.  She asked that parents continue to be active with the VCMS PTO.  She explained that the middle school uses a team teacher concept and the students are equally divided from each elementary school (and special needs students) into such teams.  Students can expect to add study hall, languages, unified arts, study skills and keyboarding to their curriculum.  Dr. Katz noted that she and the two Assistant Principals are accessable to parents and students.  Dr. Katz can also be reached

via email at beth.katz@vernonct.org.  VCMS does one fundraiser per year which is held in the fall.  Thursday evening there will be an orientation that will include PTO sign-ups and guest speakers.

 

Teacher’s Report:  Mrs. Bernardo and Mrs. Barry presented the reports for each grade on current topics and upcoming events.  The 3rd grade moon based projects will be on display in the library.  Most grades are currently working on Mother's Day surprises.

 

Science Fair/Pizza Ice-Cream Social/Auction:  Lisa Poutre reported that the profits from the silent auction was $233.00.  The Pizza/Ice Cream Social income was $600.00 and profit will be determined once expenses are tallied.  All teachers and volunteers were thanked for their participation in making the night a success.

 

Spring Book Fair:  The event had a $275.10 profit after books were bought for all students, based on their personal selections, for the summer reading program.

 

Joel Gitlin Retirement Party:  The party will be held at LSS on May 24th at 4pm.  More details will be forthcoming.

 

Teacher Appreciation Luncheon:  Heidi Bolduc will be coordinating and more details will be forthcoming.

 

Playscape: A sign was displayed that was donated by Mather Countertop Systems to be posted on the playscape.  Julie Marcotte reported that $7600 was raised from brick paver sales.  She asked for assitance in sending out order forms door-to-door to all residents in the LSS district asking for their support.

 

Boy Scout Pack 221 - Dave Murray reported that Pack Olympics was held on April 30th and was a lot of fun for the participants.  They will be having a hike on May 16th and a camp out on June 3rd.
